Short answer: Ask ChatGPT 5 to 10 questions a Mumbai customer would ask, with your area in each one (for example “best dentist in Andheri West”), in a logged-out window. Note whether you’re named, your position and who’s named instead. Repeat every few weeks, or use a free AI visibility checker to do it for you.
Mumbai is a city of neighbourhoods. Nobody asks for “the best salon in Mumbai” and then crosses the city for it. They ask for a salon in Bandra West, a physiotherapist near Powai, a CA in Goregaon. If you want to know whether ChatGPT sends those customers to you, you have to test it the way they ask. This guide gives you the exact method, a simple score sheet, and what to do with the result.
Why test with Mumbai areas instead of just “Mumbai”?
Because the answer depends on the area. OpenAI says ChatGPT may use an approximate location from your internet connection for local results, and suggests adding your city, neighbourhood or postal code when results show the wrong area (OpenAI Help). If you’re sitting in your Andheri shop and type “best salon”, ChatGPT may guess your area, or it may guess wrong. Your customer in Juhu gets a different answer.
So always name the area in the question. Test the 2 or 3 areas your customers actually come from, not only the one your shop is in.
How do I build the right questions to ask ChatGPT?
Use this simple formula: [what they want] + [qualifier] + [area].
- What they want: your category or a specific service (“dentist”, “root canal treatment”, “bridal makeup”, “GST filing”).
- Qualifier: what customers care about (“best”, “affordable”, “with good reviews”, “open on Sunday”, “for kids”, “near station”).
- Area: your neighbourhood and the ones next to it (“Andheri West”, “Lokhandwala”, “Versova”).
For a dental clinic in Andheri West, a set of 8 questions might look like this:
- Best dentist in Andheri West
- Good dental clinic near Lokhandwala
- Root canal treatment in Andheri West
- Affordable dentist in Andheri for kids
- Dentist open on Sunday in Andheri West
- Teeth cleaning near Versova with good reviews
- Best dental clinic in Andheri for braces
- Emergency dentist near Andheri station
Notice there’s no business name in any of them. You’re testing whether ChatGPT finds you on its own, the way a new customer would. You can write these in Hinglish too (“Andheri West mein accha dentist kaun hai?”), because many customers type that way.
How do I run the check step by step?
- Open a private or incognito window and go to chatgpt.com. A logged-out session avoids your own chat history and saved memories shaping the answer.
- Make sure the answer uses web search. ChatGPT may search the web automatically for questions that need current information. If the answer has no sources, you can start a search manually from the tools menu (OpenAI Help).
- Paste one question at a time into a new chat, so earlier answers don’t affect later ones.
- Record each answer in the score sheet below.
- Open the cited sources. ChatGPT’s web answers often include citations. They show you which websites it read: a directory, a review site, a blog list, a competitor’s page. OpenAI itself notes that search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect, so check what each source actually says about you.
- Finally, ask about your own business: “What do you know about [business name] in Andheri West?” Look for wrong addresses, old phone numbers or services you don’t offer.
How do I score the results?
Use a simple sheet in Google Sheets or a notebook, one row per question:
| Question | Named? (Yes / No / Unsure) | Position | Others named | Sources cited |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Best dentist in Andheri West |
Then read it like this:
- Named in most answers: your basics are working. Keep your details consistent and re-check monthly.
- Named for some questions but not others: look at which ones you missed. If you’re missing for “root canal treatment” but named for “dentist”, you probably need a clear page about that service.
- Not named at all: start with the fixes below. The businesses that were named, and the sources ChatGPT cited, show you what kind of information it found useful.
- “Unsure”: if an answer names something close to your business but not quite (a different spelling, an old name), mark it unsure rather than counting it. That often points to inconsistent naming online.
Don’t panic over one answer. AI answers vary between sessions, so a pattern across 8 questions tells you much more than one result.
What should I fix first if ChatGPT doesn’t recommend me?
Three fixes give most local businesses in Mumbai the best start.
1. Complete and correct your Google Business Profile. Google says complete and accurate information makes a business more likely to show up in local results (Google Business Profile Help), and the same details are what other websites copy. Check categories, services, hours, photos and description. The free Google Business Profile checker shows what’s missing in about a minute.
2. Add FAQs that answer the questions you just tested. If customers ask “dentist open on Sunday in Andheri West”, your website should clearly say whether you’re open on Sunday. Short, direct answers on your service pages are easy for both people and AI tools to read. Our explainer on generative engine optimization (GEO) covers why answer-style content matters.
3. Make your name, address and phone match on Justdial, Sulekha and other listings. Mumbai addresses get written in many ways: building names, wings, landmarks, “near station”. Choose one format and use it everywhere. If your directory listings are a mess, our Directory Listings Pack fixes or creates 30 listings with the same details.
If you’d like the website side done for you, the one-time AI Visibility Fix adds business schema, FAQs with FAQ schema and an llms.txt file in 48 hours. It makes your details clearer to AI tools; whether they recommend you is still their decision.
Can a free tool do this check for me?
Yes. Running 8 questions by hand, in a clean window, every month, takes time, and it’s easy to miss a “possible mention”. Our free AI visibility checker runs the same idea for you:
- Enter your business name, area and category, or paste your Google Business Profile or website link.
- We ask ChatGPT (live web search) and Gemini (AI knowledge, no live search) real customer questions for your category and area.
- You see whether you were mentioned, your position, and the businesses named instead. “Possible mentions” are flagged, not counted. Add your email for the full report with every answer and 3 fixes.
We run 4 free public checks a day. If they’re used up, you can get your full report free by email after the midnight IST reset, or run an instant scan now (price shown on the checker page). Every result comes from a real AI answer, never a guess.

Frequently asked questions
How can ChatGPT recommend my business in Mumbai?
ChatGPT can recommend your business when it finds clear, consistent information about you for the question asked. That means a complete Google Business Profile, service pages that name your area, FAQs, and the same name, address and phone on your website and listings. Nobody can guarantee a recommendation.
Should I ask ChatGPT for “Mumbai” or for my area?
Ask for your area. Customers usually search by neighbourhood, such as Andheri West, Bandra West or Powai, and the answer can change with the area. Test your own area and the 2 or 3 nearby areas your customers come from.
Why does ChatGPT give a different answer every time I ask?
AI answers vary between sessions and change over time, and ChatGPT may use an approximate location for local questions. That’s why one answer can mislead you. Check several questions and look for a pattern.
Does the free checker use the ChatGPT app?
No. It uses the official APIs: ChatGPT (OpenAI) with live web search, and Gemini (AI knowledge, no live search), which answers from what the model already knows. The apps can answer differently, so each result is a dated snapshot.
How often should I check if ChatGPT recommends my business?
Once a month is enough for most local businesses, and again a few weeks after you change your website, Google Business Profile or listings. Use the same questions each time so you can compare.
