Short answer: Your business may or may not show up on ChatGPT, and the only way to know is to ask it the questions your customers ask, with your city or area in them. ChatGPT can search the web for current information, so clear, consistent details about your business online make a mention more likely, though nobody can guarantee one.
People in India now ask ChatGPT the same things they used to type into Google: “best dentist in Andheri West”, “AC repair near Malad”, “good CA for GST filing in Thane”. If ChatGPT answers with three or four names and yours isn’t one of them, that customer may never search further. This guide shows you how to check where you stand, why some businesses get named and others don’t, and what you can fix yourself.
How do I check if my business shows up on ChatGPT?
You can check by hand in about ten minutes. Here’s the method we use.
- Open ChatGPT in a private or incognito window. If you’re signed in, your past chats and saved memories can colour the answer. A logged-out session is closer to what a new customer sees. OpenAI says people who are not signed in can also use web search (OpenAI Help).
- Write 5 questions a real customer would ask. Use your category and your area, not your business name. For a dental clinic in Andheri West, that might be:
- “Best dentist in Andheri West”
- “Dental clinic near Lokhandwala with good reviews”
- “Who does root canal treatment in Andheri West?”
- “Affordable dentist in Andheri for kids”
- “Dentist open on Sunday in Andheri West”
- Always put the area or city in the question. ChatGPT may guess your location from your internet connection, and OpenAI suggests adding your city, neighbourhood or postal code when local results show the wrong area (OpenAI Help).
- Note three things for each answer: were you named, at what position, and which other businesses were named instead.
- Then ask about yourself directly: “What do you know about [your business name] in [area]?” If the answer has the wrong address, an old phone number or a service you don’t offer, write that down. It tells you which information online is out of date.
Do this once and you’ll have a rough picture. The catch is that answers change from one session to the next, so a single question on a single day can mislead you. That’s why it helps to ask several questions and repeat the check every few weeks.
Why does ChatGPT mention some businesses and not others?
ChatGPT doesn’t keep a list of “approved” businesses. When it searches the web, it reads pages it can find and builds an answer from them. OpenAI says ChatGPT ranks search results using several factors meant to find relevant, reliable information, and that placement is not guaranteed (OpenAI Help).
In practice, the businesses that get named usually have:
- Clear, consistent details everywhere. The same business name, address and phone number on your website, Google Business Profile, Justdial, Sulekha and other listings. If one site says Goregaon East and another says Goregaon West, an AI tool has to guess.
- Pages that answer the question. If someone asks for “root canal treatment in Andheri West”, a clinic with a clear page about root canal treatment, mentioning Andheri West, gives ChatGPT something to quote. A homepage that only says “Welcome to our clinic” does not.
- Reviews and mentions on other websites. Answers often draw on what other sites say about you, not only what you say about yourself. Our free Google review check compares your reviews with nearby businesses.
- A website that AI crawlers are allowed to read. OpenAI uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, and sites that block it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links (OpenAI crawler docs). Some hosting or security settings block these crawlers without the owner knowing.
None of these is a trick. They’re the same things that help a customer trust you.
Does Gemini show the same results as ChatGPT?
Not always. Our free checker asks two AI tools: ChatGPT with live web search, and Gemini (AI knowledge, no live search). The Gemini check answers from what the model already knows about businesses, without searching the web at that moment. So it’s common to be named by one and not the other.
If ChatGPT names you but Gemini doesn’t, your current web pages are probably doing their job, and the gap is in how widely your business is known. If neither names you, start with the basics in the steps below.
I’m on Google Maps. Why am I missing from ChatGPT?
Google Maps and ChatGPT work differently. Google says local results on Maps and Search are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence, and that complete, accurate Business Profile information helps (Google Business Profile Help). Distance matters a lot on Maps: the same search gives different results in Goregaon and in Bandra.
ChatGPT, when it searches, reads web pages and other sources and writes an answer. A strong Google Business Profile helps, but it isn’t the whole picture. A business can show up in the Maps results near its shop and still be missing from ChatGPT’s answer for the same question.
What can I fix myself this week?
Here are five steps you can do without a developer.
- Make your name, address and phone match everywhere. Pick one exact format (shop or unit number, building, road, area, city and PIN code, written the same way each time) and use it on your website, Google Business Profile and every directory listing. Update old phone numbers.
- Complete your Google Business Profile. Add your categories, services, hours (including holiday hours), photos and a clear description. Our guide to setting up a Google Business Profile in Mumbai walks through each field, and the free Google Business Profile checker shows what’s missing.
- Give each main service its own page. One page per service, written in plain language, with your area named naturally. Answer the questions customers ask you on the phone: price range, timings, how long it takes, what to bring.
- Add a short FAQ to your key pages. Five or six real questions with direct answers. This is easy for both customers and AI tools to read.
- Check your website’s technical basics. Make sure search and AI crawlers aren’t blocked and that your pages load properly on mobile. The free Site Fix website audit checks robots.txt, schema and speed in one scan.
If you’d rather have this done for you, our one-time AI Visibility Fix sets up business schema, FAQs and an llms.txt file in 48 hours. It makes your information clearer to AI tools; it can’t make any AI recommend you, and we won’t promise that.

We run 4 free public checks a day. If they’re used up when you visit, you can get your full report free by email after the daily reset at midnight IST, or run an instant scan straight away (the price is shown on the checker page). Frequently asked questions
Is my business on ChatGPT if it is on Google?
Not necessarily. Google Maps results depend heavily on where the searcher is, while ChatGPT with live web search builds its answer from web pages and other sources. A business can appear on Google Maps and still be missing from ChatGPT’s answer for the same question.
How can I make my business show up on ChatGPT?
Keep your business name, address and phone the same on every website, complete your Google Business Profile, give each service a clear page that names your area, add FAQs, and make sure AI crawlers can read your site. These steps make a mention more likely, but nobody can guarantee one.
Does ChatGPT show different answers to different people?
Yes. Answers can change between sessions and over time, and ChatGPT may use an approximate location to give local results. That’s why it’s best to check several questions, include the area in each one, and repeat the check every few weeks.
Can someone guarantee my business will be recommended by ChatGPT?
No. ChatGPT is run by OpenAI and decides its own answers. Anyone promising a guaranteed ChatGPT recommendation or a fixed position is promising something they don’t control.
Which AI tools does the free Technotic checker cover?
ChatGPT with live web search is the main check. We also ask Gemini (AI knowledge, no live search), which answers from what the model already knows and does not search the web. Results come only from real answers to real customer questions.
Is the AI visibility checker really free?
Yes. The on-screen check is free, and you can get the full report free by email. We run 4 free public checks a day; when they’re used up, your full report is emailed after the midnight IST reset, or you can choose a paid instant scan.
