Why ChatGPT Doesn’t Mention Your Clinic or Salon (and How to Fix It)

Why ChatGPT doesn’t mention your clinic or salon: a sample answer that leaves your salon out, plus four fixes.

Short answer: ChatGPT usually skips a clinic or salon when it can’t find clear, consistent information about it: different names or addresses across listings, no page for each treatment or service, vague Google categories, few recent reviews, or a website AI crawlers can’t read. Most of these you can fix yourself in a few weeks.

You run a good dental clinic in Andheri West or a busy salon in Bandra West. Your patients and clients like you. But when someone asks ChatGPT “best dentist in Andheri West” or “best salon in Bandra West for hair colour”, it names other places. Here’s why that happens, and what to do about it, reason by reason.

Why is my clinic or salon not showing up on ChatGPT?

When ChatGPT searches the web, it reads pages it can find and builds an answer from them. OpenAI says it ranks results using several factors meant to find relevant, reliable information, and that placement is not guaranteed (OpenAI Help). So the question isn’t “how do I get on the list?” It’s “what does ChatGPT find when it looks for a clinic or salon like mine?” Here are the common gaps for clinics and salons.

1. Your clinic name, doctor’s name and address don’t match

This is very common with clinics. The signboard shows the clinic’s name, the Google Business Profile shows the doctor’s name with “Clinic” added, Justdial has only the doctor’s name, and an old listing still shows the previous address. To you they’re obviously the same place. To an AI tool reading different websites, they can look like different businesses, or like a business it isn’t sure about.

Salons have the same problem when they rebrand or open a second branch and both share one phone number.

Fix: decide on one exact business name, one address format (shop number, building, road, area, PIN code) and one main phone number. Update your website, Google Business Profile, Justdial, Sulekha and any health or beauty listing sites you use. If there are many old listings, the Directory Listings Pack fixes or creates 30 listings with the same details.

2. You have no page for each treatment or service

A clinic website with one “Services” page listing “RCT, cleaning, braces, implants” gives ChatGPT very little to quote when someone asks “root canal treatment in Andheri West”. Same for a salon with a single price-list image.

Fix: write a short page for each main treatment or service. Explain what it is, who it’s for, roughly how long it takes, what to expect after, and that it’s available at your Andheri West or Bandra West branch. Write in plain language, the way you’d explain it at the front desk. For clinics, keep it factual and avoid promises about results.

3. Your Google Business Profile categories are vague

If a dental clinic is listed only as “Doctor”, or a salon only as “Beauty salon” when it mainly does hair, both Google and the sites that copy Google’s details get a blurred picture.

Fix: set the most specific primary category (for example “Dentist” or “Hair salon”) and add real secondary categories. Add each service to your profile too; our guide on adding services to your Google Business Profile shows how. The free Google Business Profile checker flags missing categories, services and hours.

4. Few recent reviews, and no replies

Google says prominence, which includes how many reviews you have and your ratings, is one of the main factors for local results, and that replying to reviews shows you value feedback (Google Business Profile Help). Reviews also give AI tools words to work with: “gentle with kids”, “on time”, “good with curly hair”.

Fix: ask happy patients and clients for a review at the right moment (after a successful appointment, not during it), and reply to every review. For clinics, never mention a patient’s treatment or health details in a reply, even if they mentioned it first. A simple “Thank you for visiting us, we’re glad you’re happy” is enough. Never buy or incentivise reviews. To see how your reviews compare with nearby clinics or salons, use the free Google review checker.

5. Your only real presence is Instagram

Many salons, and some skin and aesthetic clinics, put all their effort into Instagram. That’s fine for followers, but when ChatGPT searches the web, there may be little it can read and cite: no website with your services, no address in text, no FAQs.

Fix: keep Instagram, but make sure you also have a simple website with your services, area, timings and contact details in text (not just inside images), plus a complete Google Business Profile.

6. Your website blocks AI crawlers without you knowing

OpenAI uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search. Sites that opt out of it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still appear as navigational links (OpenAI crawler docs). OpenAI also says the website host or content delivery network must allow traffic from its published search bot addresses (OpenAI Help). Some security plugins and hosting settings block bots by default.

Fix: check your robots.txt and ask your web developer or host whether AI crawlers are being blocked. The free Site Fix website audit includes a robots.txt crawler check.

7. You’re new, so Gemini doesn’t know you yet

Our checker also asks Gemini (AI knowledge, no live search), which answers from what the model already knows and does not search the web. A clinic that opened recently, or a salon that changed its name, may simply not be known to it yet. This one fixes itself slowly as your business is written about more widely; there’s no shortcut, and you should be wary of anyone who offers one.

What should a clinic or salon do first?

If you only have one afternoon, do these in order:

  1. Make your name, address and phone match on your website, Google Business Profile and Justdial.
  2. Set the right primary category and add your services on Google.
  3. Write one clear page for your most-asked treatment or service, with your area in it.
  4. Add 5 FAQs to that page with straight answers (timings, parking, appointment needed or not, how long it takes).
  5. Run a check to see where you stand, then repeat it in a few weeks.

If you’d rather not touch the website yourself, our one-time AI Visibility Fix adds business schema, FAQs with FAQ schema and an llms.txt file in 48 hours. It makes your clinic or salon easier for AI tools to read; the AI still decides who it recommends.

Check free: does ChatGPT mention your clinic or salon?

Our free AI visibility checker asks ChatGPT (live web search) and Gemini (AI knowledge, no live search) the kind of questions your patients and clients ask, like “best dentist in Andheri West”. You see whether you’re mentioned, at what position, and which clinics or salons are named instead. Add your email for the full report with every answer and 3 fixes picked for you.

We run 4 free public checks a day. If they’re used up, you can get your full report free by email after the midnight IST reset, or run an instant scan straight away (price shown on the checker page). Results come only from real AI answers.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my clinic not showing up on ChatGPT when it has good Google reviews?

Reviews help, but they’re only one part. ChatGPT also needs clear information it can read: the same clinic name and address everywhere, a page for each treatment, the right Google categories and a website AI crawlers can access. A gap in any of these can keep you out of the answer.

Should my clinic use the doctor’s name or the clinic name on listings?

Use one name consistently. If patients know you by the doctor’s name, that can be part of the business name, but it must be written the same way on your website, Google Business Profile and every listing. Mixing names makes it harder for AI tools to connect them.

Can I reply to a patient’s Google review that mentions their treatment?

You can reply, but don’t repeat or confirm any treatment or health details, even if the patient mentioned them. Thank them in general terms and invite them to contact the clinic directly for anything specific.

My salon is very active on Instagram. Isn’t that enough for ChatGPT?

Often not. When ChatGPT searches the web, it needs text it can read and cite: your services, area, timings and contact details. Keep Instagram, but add a simple website and a complete Google Business Profile.

How long does it take before ChatGPT mentions my clinic or salon?

There’s no fixed time, and nobody can promise a mention. ChatGPT with live web search can pick up changes once your pages are updated and readable, while Gemini (AI knowledge, no live search) only reflects what the model already knows. Re-check every few weeks with the same questions.
